How I Customized my Blackberry Curve

Saturday, January 12th, 2008 | Technology

Since my post on enabling Google Maps with GPS on the BlackBerry Curve 8310 is very popular I decided to share with you how I customized my Blackberry to make day to day usage efficient and fun.
As a first step I reviewed the different Themes (Options -> Themes). I decided to go with the “BB Dimension Today” Theme. Having the latest unread messages, upcoming appointments and missed call information all on the homescreen is a great feature and allows me to get the key information I need at a glance.
Another important decision is the assignment of the left and right buttons on the side of the Blackberry. They will allow you to access important apps without using the trackball. Got to Options -> Screen/Keyboard and scroll down to the “Convenience Key Opens” menu items. I decided to leave the right side key with the default which is the camera, so that I can start it quickly for a snapshot. I changed the assignment of the left side button to “Browser”. That allows me to open the integrated web browser easily, which I use to Twitter and to check my Google Reader.
While you are in the Screen/Keyboard options menu you might also want to adjust the Backlight Timeout (I use 30 seconds) and turn off the key tones and trackball sound (Set “Trackball – Audible Roll” to Mute).

Next I switched over to the applications screen (with the button left of the trackball, lets call it menu button). Wow what a mess! So many application icons, many of them I will never use. I checked out every application and decided to keep the following icons (to hide an application icon highlight it and press the menu button and select “Hide”):
First row:
Profiles – Since I need to switch often from Normal to Vibrate mode this is my most important icon
Messages – E-mail is obviously the heart of the Blackberry
Calendar – Also important, but often it is sufficient to me to check the upcoming meetings on the home screen
Browser – I actually have the browser as a shortcut on the left side button so I rarely use the icon to access it
Media – Just use it to browse the pictures which I took with the integrated camera
Second row:
Lock – That is another icon I need a lot, so it is just on scroll click away from the top
VoiceDialing – For me that was the big surprise feature. If you have not yet used it try it out now. It does not require to record the names, but applies voice recognition based on the spelling of the names in the directory. Works great for me (without any training), especially with a Bluetooth headset
Camera – I have the camera as a shortcut on the rigtht side button so I don’t use this icon that often
Tasks – Frankly I have not used tasks at all so far (don’t use them in Outlook either), but thought the app might come handy eventually
MemoPad – The MemoPad is a little useful application. I use it to keep track of my baby son’s weight and height, gift wishes from my wife and other random things
Alarm – I use the Alarm when I am traveling, since I do not trust hotel alarm clocks. Did you know you can turn the Blackberry off and the Alarm will still work? Just don’t take out the battery :-)
Third Row:
Gmail – For my private email I use the Google Gmail client for Blackberry
Google Maps – What a great app. Just got much better with version 2.0.1.
Options – Need to be able to continue to tweek the Blackberry
Manage Connections – This has significantly improved over older Blackberries. You can easily enable/disable Network as well as Bluetooth connections
Turn Power Off
You really want to make sure that the most important apps for you which are not accessible via buttons on the device can be accessed with no or minimum usage of the trackball. So the most important app is in the upper left corner, other important apps down or left of it and so on.

Now let’s talk about customizing the sounds your Blackberry makes. Adjusting the ringtone is actually not as straightforward as I thought. Keeping in mind that all sounds are associated with the profile which is active, select “Profiles”, scroll down to “Advanced…”, select the profile you want to modify (let’s say your active one) and hit the menu button (left to the trackball). Select “Edit”.
To change the ringtone, select phone and then you can change the Tune (second menu item). I am using the Ringer_ClassicPhone. Here you can also adjust the volume and other parameters.

That’s it for today. Hope you have fun with your Blackberry and let me know some of your customization tips in the comments.

Great ideas for blackberry curve users, but I still need help. I’ve been trying to turn off the notification sound when I receive an e-mail. I don’t mind the sounds for SMS and MMS texts, but I get so many e-mails that it’s really distracting. I know that it has something to do with profiles and such, but I’ve just not figured it out yet. I set up a new exception and called it e-mail, but it didn’t work. Not sure what to do. Any ideas? Please advise if you can. It’s sort of driving me bonkers. I just recently had jaw surgery and have been sleeping on my sofa for 2 weeks (staying elevated) and apparently e-mails come at all hours of the night. I would be so grateful if you could let me know what to do in very specific steps to disable the notifcation sound from e-mail only.
Thank you kindly,
Amal

Amal,
as mentioned above you can change notifications sounds in profiles.
1) Select Profiles (the icon with the speaker symbol)
2) Scroll down and select “Advanced…”
3) Scroll to the “Active” Profile (probably “Normal”) and press the menu button (left of the trackball)
4) Select Edit
5) Select “Messenger – New Message”
6) Change to “None” for both “Out of Holster” and “In Holster”
7) Repeat the same for “Messenger – Alert”

Cheers,

Matthias

Thanks! I followed your instructions. I set up my left convenience key to take me straight to yahoo email. I took out all the annoying icons. It’s all good now. Thanks for taking time to put this info on the net so that people like me can take advantage of it and get more out of our Blackberries.

I’m still trying to figure out how to have a customized signature when I send an email or a text from my curve. Any hints??

Matthias Zeller
March 15, 2008

Hello Mary,
you can set a customized signature as follows:
1) Open the Blackberry email application
2) Press the “Menu” button (the button left to the trackball with the 7 dots on it)
3) Select “Options”
4) Select “Email Settings”
5) Change “Use Auto Signature” to “Yes” and enter the text you want to use for your signature, e.g. “Pardon my spelling but this was sent from Crackberry”

Cheers,

Matthias

Hey Matthias Zeller! Thanks for the awesome tips… A couple of questions…

1. I am using the “BB Dimension Today” Theme as well and I am just wondering if there is anyway to change the YELLOW writing on the home screen where it shows the daily info “messages” “calendar” “call log” and “applications” area??? Also the highlighted YELLOW when scrolling over them and the icons in the applications area? (Sorry for the loaded question)

2. Is there anymore customizing tips that you can think of just to make the BB8310 just a little better than my co-workers?

Just thought I’d ask :)

Thanks again for all your help!

For those of you asking about the auto signature, go to your carriers website and check out your blackberry email settings. All carriers have an option on the website to setup filters as well as your signature if you can’t find it in your devices options.

it sounds like Maathias is a corporate user.. so he has different settings in his phone. If you use at&t personal internet email (not blackberry corporate server) you need to log into the webmail account that blackberry provides you with att and change your signature preferences there. That site is located at https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=mycingular.

Hi there, I am thinking of getting a 8310 model with Rogers in Canada. To do so, I have to get a 30$/6gb data plan… so I was wondering about what can be done with such a plan. Can the 8310 go on sites such as youtube, like the 8330? If so, how nice is the browser overall with other pages?
To be honest if browsing isn’t fully functional I think I’ll have to get another phone :(

I moved from Cingular 8525. I am so hooked to that phone, but THANX a lot to your tips, i have started enjoying my blackberry too. The one about google maps was really cool, makes my phone more useful than just a sitting duck. I have the ATT blackberry personal package, i hope it will cover all the data transmission and i won’t be hit with a ginormous bill. Will be asking you more Q’s as i learn more about this phone. Thanks once again.

Hi! I have the Blackberry 8310 too. Things are differnt if you have different themes. This might be long so pardon my spelling. I have the At&t theme, the default. For those of u who asked how to turn the volume down, go to the side of the phone and there should be a long button so just press up and down to change the volume. for those of u who want it silent u can press the button on top of the blackberry (acutally on the top of the phone)that looks like a sideways bell with a dash through it, that is the mute button. i use it a lot in class. when u go to profiles it gives u different options. each option come with a different sound for every different thing (sms, mms, email, call.) i have mine on normal which beeps when u recieve an sms. to change themes and other important things go to the folder with the 2 different color wheel looking things.inside should be 4 differnt options (5 including the up button) go to the screw driver to change themes. it is helpful if u type t to go to themes or o for owner. in owner u can put ur name and information….. now is where it gets complicated. the information that u put in is actaully a SIGNATURE….. sooo when u are in a sms text type sig and press the space bar. whatever u placed in the information section should pop up. this might just be my phone…. but it works…. if you are confused by now please start over.. to another question u can go on youtube on the 8310 but it is really weird and isnt very good. to someone who accidently deleted an icon, i am having the same problems. to someone who asked what the buttons on the right side of the “bb” do those are the volume buttons!!!!!now if you are really really confused please keep in mind this is if you have the theme set on At&t. also, the signature for sms texts is not an auto, u must type sig and then press the space bar…also if u need to delete something asap like a text, just scroll onto it and press the delete buttton and it asks u if u would like to delete it. also if you are on the home screen, press the space bar to go to ur call log and to make calls. i hope that those of you that asked questions that went unanswered come back here and check and see this message.

I put this into 2v separate messages to help. If you would like to change you ringtone go to the computer screen that has a music icon on it and says media when u scroll over it.click on in then scroll sideways to the music icons that say ring tones, not click, u can view all ringtones and click on one to make it you ringtone…for those of you who dont like any of those ringtones, u can purchase one (i cant, so if u did purchase on ur on ur own) or u can record one. go to applications and then go to the picture of the recorder that says voice notes recorder. please keep in mind i have the At&t theme on. you can record something off youtube just hold ur phone up to the computer and click the track ball to start recording. for everyone, if you screen is black (its not turned off just timed out) u must click a button to reawaken it and then u can carrry on doing stuff. if anyone is have trouble with speed dials, click on a letter and hold it down (do not click 1 because it is the voice mail system!) it will ask you if u would like to assign a number to a letter and click yes. you can then proceed to make a speed dial. now, to use the speed dial, say ur mom is m, click and hold m and it will call her. when sms texting or emailing, if you want to make a letter capitalized u can hold that letter down and it will capitalize it for you. also if you are reading a sms text or mms and u want to reply, just click the track ball, there is no need to go to the menu. if you want to add a recipient u can click the button with 7 dots , also known as the , menu button. if you want to make a picture a backround for ur blackberry, go to the camera.you can take a picture , and you see that bar along the bottom with all the icons? click the one second from the left. if you want to make a picture you already took the backround go to pictures, click on a picture , then the button with 7 dots, and find the option that says set as backround.

to “newmommy”
you can go to settings, then options, then spell check. click spell check and you can customize your spell checking. when in an sms or mms text click the button with 7 dots and find check spelling. or you could just have great spelling and nothing is wrong when you text. :)

I always lock my phone as not to make too many ‘bum calls’. You can do this by simply pressing the mute button on top of the phone, and will go into standby. Press for a couple of seconds. It works way better than the locking way..

Monika
April 4, 2009

yea, that works too. I found out how to restore icons… this is complicated and confusing but I will try to make it easy.
1. make sure you are on the home screen.
2. click the menu button (7 dots)
3. click show all
4. u should see shadowy icons
5. but ur cursor over the shadowy icon and click the menu button. there should be a check mark next to hide, just uncheck it.
6. when u are done restoring the ones that u want go to the menu and unclick show all, the icons u restored should still be there
ps. u can scroll over different icons to show all different things

I have just bought the Blackberry 8330 from US Cellular. I know some of the features will be different with other carriers, however I’m wondering do I have to keep all the icons that I don’t need right now? If I do take them off what can I do to retrieve them at a later point?
Is there some way to use the ring tone that I have set for some of my contacts as their SMS tone as well? So far I love this phone, but this is my first smartphone and it sure makes me feel dumb!

Sorry if i missed this above, but my question is the following:

How do you change which apps appear on the desktop of your theme? I get the feeling that you can’t unless you change the theme (its hard-coded?)

Mike

Oops, just moused around with the Hide option and discovered that the options displayed on your desktop are the first options displayed in the applications menu, and that you can move all of the applications (and/or create folders to aggregate like types in!).

So never mind, i answered my own questions :).

For all those people staring at a bazillion icons, you can group them into folders. Click on the Blackberry (Menu) button from your main screen. It will show all your icons. Hit Menu again and click on Add Folder. Name it, scroll to assign which icon you want (there is a game one with a little picture of a controller) and then push the Add button.

Next, find the icons you want to shove into that folder. You will have to add each one manually. Hit the menu button and select Move. Then using the trackball, move it over the new directory and it will tell you underneath which folder you are dropping it into. Hit the trackball to release and add it there.

You can rid your screen of a ton of icons that way. I have mine sorted into only 4 rows. At the bottom, I have 5 directories (only got my pink Curve yesterday!) Games, Emails (from my 8 different accounts. I leave my primary one on the top row), Utilities (all the setup, bluetooth, options, etc.), Productivity (Word to go, etc. For some reason Docs to Go won’t go into a folder) and Favorites.

I was trying to figure out how to get a list of my favorite phone numbers in there (like I used to have on the home page of my Treo) and ran across this page. Will keep searching.

The reason is, even though I can assign a letter, some contacts start with the same letter. For instance, if I want to call my son Shawn, but need to dial Steve from work and Sarah my best friend, then I have to get creative.

I just want to put my frequently dialed number all in one folder on the menu. I may have to do it from Contacts and leave the Favorites there.

And I keep wanting to push my selection on the screen, lol. But I do love my new BB. I signed up for MobiTV for it so I can watch tv on it, like I did on my Treo. On their website, it says it doesn’t support the Curve, but you can get it here: http://matthiaszeller.com/blog/2008/01/12/how-i-customized-my-blackberry-curve/

Another question I had was how much memory could I get. I got an 8G micro SDHC and it works perfectly. Enabled mass storage in Options.

I also bought the iBerry Pink Zen theme for my pink phone here (very girly!) http://www.bplay.com/theme.php?t=349

I signed up for the Blackberry Owner’s Lounge and the Crackberry sites.

One of the best things was finding a cool way to make your own stand (Also have an iPod Touch 3G 32G) out of a paperclip. I had bought a car charger, etc. for my BB and was thinking about getting a stand. Watch this, it’s cool. Mine wasn’t very good, but I got it to work. Easy to bend using hemostats. Did not use the template as it printed out too long, even checked it was at 100%. Maybe if I reduced it. http://www.deanying.com/PermaLink%2Cguid%2Ca99a1c06-b55b-4001-afeb-46a707055ecc.aspx

And lastly, I am setting up free ringtones by genre at http://crackberry.com/ringtone/by/genre. They seem to have the nicest interface to preview a bunch at once with easy free downloads.

Next will be games and a free contact manager that I found some good sites for.

Hope some of these tips helps someone! =0)

In Canada, I went thru Virgin Mobile and purchased a BB Curve. The deal was about two months ago: $50 per month: 500mb data and the choice of either of these options…1.voicemail and call display OR 2.unlimited text messaging not meaning BB Messenger and unlimited local calling. My husband took option 1 (he doesnt text much) and I took option 2. I also downloaded BB App world and downloaded the latest version of BB Messenger 5.0.0.5.7, works better. My friend is with Telus and got no internet with the exception of Facebook, whoo hoo. $30 bucks for that! You cant really use the BB for what its meant for. But I cant say enuf about Virgins service and no real interuptions for me in service. GO Virgin!!! Got my first bill and guess what, no freakin surprises…Thanks Xavier from Virgin…

I was having trouble making left convenience button work. Im on 8310 with the default AT&T theme. could set button to address book or dictionary or whatever, kept coming up to phone page (recent calls, etc) But not all the time. Been that way since I got it more than year ago.
Finally figured out that if I press LCB for more than 1/4 second, it goes to phone but if I poke it very briefly, it goes to page I have set in the Screen/Keyboard option page.
Exception, has not gone to Compose yet… always another mystery!-) thanks for listening

Another tip: I never need to silence my bb because when it is in the holster, it only vibrates. twice for email, more for phone calls. If I can talk, I pull it out and it answers (auto). If I can’t, I leave it there and it just keeps vibrating several more times.

In Profiles->Advanced->Vibrate my settings are:

for Messages, and each email account, tasks, calendar…:
out of Holster–Tone, Ring tone–Notifier_’various’, Volume–Low, Number of Beeps–2, repeat notification–LED, number of vibrations–2
in Holster–Vibrate, Ring tone–Notifier Crystal(na), Volume–Mute, Number of Beeps–2, Repeat Notification–Led, Number of Vibrations–2

for Phone:
out of Holster–tone, Ring tone–Notifier_Eager, Volume–Low, Repeat Notification–LED, Number of Vibrations–3
in Holster–Vibrate, Ring Tone–Notifier_Eater, Volume–Mute, Repeat Notification–LED, Number of Vibrations–3

Do Not Disturb–No

I don’t think it actually vibrates when phone or messages arrive while bb is out of holster, just the appropriate sound. I added a magnet to a quality canvas holster to facilitate in/out holster sensing. I either wear the bb in holster (on my belt) or lay it on desk where ‘low’ volume is sufficient. Works for me…

I am just wondering how to find the preloaded cartoony icon pictures in my Blackberry? They’re the cute little pictures that you can use to give as a profile picture to you contacts. They just up and vanished. The phone is no longer hooked up to a server so it’s not like it updated and they’re gone. They were there up until a few days ago so I don’t know what happened. I did let the phone’s battery die so I’m wondering if that’s the problem? I’m really hoping to get the images back I need to transfer them to my new phone. If I can’t revive them here is there another place I can get them?

smart dialing in phones i ve used previously includes nbr suggestion and completion when dialing. for instance if i m dialing a number that starts with 0154, the screen would suggest all nbrs previously dialed starting with 0154 and would suggest all nbrs stored in my phone book that start with 0154…
same thing used to apply to email addresses when writing an address in new email.
another thing is word completion/suggestion while writing a message or in calendar.
either frequently typed words, or pre-recognized words by phone would pup up in three or 4 different suggestions as one types.
this makes writing much faster and easier.
all above featured are not available in my curve 8900 or i cat seem to be able to find them.
used to have them in all previously used handhelds.
anybody can help? thanks

Hello, in my BB Curve, I keep getting my oldest Yahoo mail as a notification, that I received a new message. If I delete that one, I get the next one. Every day I receive this message. Has anyone seen this error? Thanks so much!
